Watermelon: The Definitive, Step-by-Step Guide to Slicing It

During the summer, we'll be holding a day dedicated to teaching useful skills. How to cut a watermelon into uniform cubes of any size is the subject of this post.

One of the best parts of summer is digging into a bowl of refreshing, cold watermelon.

However, I rarely buy and prepare a watermelon despite my fondness for this naturally hydrating and extremely refreshing fruit. Why Considering the hassle it causes That's what I thought, anyway

All of that changed, though, once I discovered this foolproof technique for slicing watermelons.

It turns out that I've been incorrectly slicing watermelons the whole time.

And now that I know how to properly cut a watermelon, we have it in our fridge almost every day, and I am one happy summertime woman.

The best way to slice a watermelon was a discovery I owe to my sister. Her two and four-year-old daughters are completely hooked on it (they're smart little ladies), so she became Chief Watermelon Cutter to expedite the process for everyone's benefit, especially her own.

You won't find a simpler method for slicing a watermelon than this one.

Then, once I've carved up the watermelon, I like to split my haul in half.

  • I store half of it in the fridge and eat it as is. The refreshing taste of a new watermelon never fails to satisfy.
  • The remaining half is stored in a freezer bag until needed for a refreshing Watermelon Smoothie. Watermelon freezing instructions are provided below.

How to Select the Finest Watermelon

Choosing a good watermelon is an important step in enjoying this summer fruit. What makes the ideal watermelon? Here are some suggestions.

  • Choose a matte watermelon rather than a shiny one, as the latter is more likely to have been overgrown.
  • Indicators of watering or insect problems, such as bumps or holes, should prompt you to choose another option.
  • Watermelons with a lot of weight on them are usually packed with flavor. You can compare their relative weights by picking up a few to compare how they feel.

Predicting the Perfect Watermelon Picking Time

Follow these guidelines and you'll be able to choose a sweet and juicy watermelon.

  • If you tap or knock on the rind of a ripe watermelon, you should hear a hollow sound.
  • The skin shouldn't scratch easily or break under pressure.
  • The watermelon has a "field spot" on the bottom. This area of the watermelon should be yellow when it's ready to eat.

The Proper Method for Slicing a Watermelon

This is the most efficient method for slicing a watermelon. It can also be used to cut watermelon into sticks and cubes of varying sizes.

  1. Take the entire watermelon and wash it.

  1. Cut it in half across the middle so that you have two circular pieces instead of one long one.
  2. Trim the base of the stem
  3. Watermelon should be placed on the cutting board with the cut side down.

  1. To remove the rind and white flesh, hold your knife at a slight incline and make downward cuts towards the cutting board. Once you cut into the watermelon, you'll be able to see the shockingly dark pink flesh inside.
  2. Make sure you get all the rind off before you stop.

  1. Make three complete circles by slicing the watermelon in thirds.

  1. To make the sticks, cut the circles into quarters.

  1. Cube the sticks and slice them.
  2. When finished, do the same with the remaining watermelon halves and the remaining circular pieces.
  3. You can put the cubes in the fridge to chill if you like. ENJOY

Step 7 (when the watermelon is in thirds) is where you can get creative by using a cookie cutter to make fun shapes in the melon instead of cutting it into cubes or sticks. For the Fourth of July or Labor Day, stars would be appropriate, while hearts are more appropriate for a romantic occasion.

Advice on Storing Watermelons

  • How to Maintain a Watermelon in its Whole Form Watermelons can be kept for up to two weeks at room temperature.
  • When Keeping Watermelon in Cubes Watermelon cubes will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days if stored in an airtight container.

For Use in a Freezer Watermelon Snack

  • To Freeze Put the watermelon cubes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper, and freeze until solid. Once frozen, store in a zip-top bag or other freezer-safe container for up to three months.

To Prepare Watermelon for a Gathering

For those wondering how to cut watermelon for a gathering, this is a great method. To see everyone's faces light up, simply put out a bowl of watermelon cubes.

Allow at least 4 hours in the fridge (ideally 8 hours) if you plan on serving this watermelon at a party, so that the pieces are icy cold and as refreshing as possible.

How to Use the Suggested Utensils for Slicing Watermelons

My sister is to be thanked for the world-changing watermelon-cutting trick she taught me. I'm excited to share this simple watermelon-cutting method in the hopes that it brings you as much summer happiness as it has brought me.

  • 1 watermelon
  • knife and cutting board
  • Watermelon should be washed and patted dry.
  • Slice the watermelon in half lengthwise (not across) with a sharp chef's knife to create two pieces with a circular cut side (if you cut it across, you'd get an oval).
  • First, cut off the watermelon's stem end so that the red flesh inside can be seen through the rind.
  • The melon should be placed on the cutting board with the larger, fully cut side down.
  • Remove a thin slice of the rind by holding the knife at a slight incline, starting at the stem end and working your way down toward the cutting board. The watermelon's dark pink flesh is revealed once the rind has been cut deeply enough to reveal it. The red ink will bleed, but that's all right. )
  • Turn the melon and do it again, this time making sure to get all of the rind.
  • You can make three complete circles by slicing the melon in half horizontally.
  • Each circle can be cut into cubes of varying sizes.
  • Proceed with the second half of the melon in the same manner.
  • Chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours (if you like your watermelon really cold) or up to 3 days (or freeze for 3 months or longer).
  • Watermelon cubes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days if stored in an airtight container.
  • Put the watermelon cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and freeze them until they are solid.
  • Once the pieces are frozen, you can store them in a ziptop bag or other freezer-safe container for up to three months.
