Smoothies, whether they're made with strawberries, bananas, peanut butter, or apples, can be enjoyed at any meal of the day.

As easy as they are to make, however, it is surprisingly simple to make a mistake. It's possible for them to be the wrong consistency (too thick, too thin, too sweet, not sweet enough, too chunky, too icy, etc.).

So, let me teach you the ins and outs of making a smoothie. This is my tried-and-true method for creating the ideal smoothie, complete with the ideal proportions of liquid, fruit, yogurt, and additional ingredients.

I've provided a ton of alternative options so you can tweak it to your liking.

Exactly What Should I Put Into My Smoothie?

One of the best things about a fruit smoothie recipe is how versatile it can be. What I typically include in my smoothies is as follows:

  • You can use regular milk, almond milk, soy milk, coconut water, or any other type of milk or juice you like. Use iced tea if you like!
  • Greek Yogurt: a delicious way to increase your protein intake and create a satisfyingly thick and creamy texture. Yogurt made from plants, rather than dairy, works just as well, and you can omit it if you like (the final product won't be as thick, though).
  • Banana: I always have a bag of frozen banana slices on hand. The frozen banana adds texture and sweetness without added sugar.
  • Smoothies are great with a variety of frozen fruits, especially berries. Some of our favorite fruits include pineapple, mango, and berries. Moreover, watermelon can be used, as in the delicious and revitalizing Watermelon Smoothie.
  • So many different plug-ins allow for extensive personalization. A variety of ingredients such as protein powders, nuts/seeds, oats, extracts, sweeteners, and even avocados can be added to your smoothie.

Liquids with a velvety consistency:

We've covered the fundamentals up top, but here are some additional enjoyable possibilities:

  • Milk with chocolate or almond milk with chocolate flavor
  • Coffee or tea served iced
  • Fruit juice, preferably of the pineapple or mango variety
  • Choice of nut, rice, coconut, or soy milk
  • Consume some fermented beverages, like kombucha or kefir.

Fruit smoothies:

A thick and refreshing smoothie can be made with frozen fruit. Make sure to complement your fresh fruit with a frozen banana or a cup of ice.

  • The majority of my smoothies consist of bananas that I have frozen. It gives them a luxurious, velvety texture.
  • Peeled apples or unpeeled oranges
  • Superfruits and superfoods, berries are loaded with anti-oxidants and fiber. (among the many berry smoothies we've tried, this Blueberry Smoothie has quickly become a favorite. )
  • Enjoyable tropical flavors include pineapple, mango, and kiwi (especially when combined with coconut milk, as in this enticing Tropical Smoothie recipe). )
  • Stone fruits such as peaches, cherries, and others (when they're not in season, grab a bag of frozen to save money).

Ideas for Ingredients to Put in Smoothies

  • Spread some peanut butter, cashew butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter on it for a nutrient and flavor boost.
  • Sprinkle in some seeds, like chia, flax, or hemp hearts.
  • Mix in some cooked grains like quick oats, brown rice, or quinoa.
  • Add a scoop of your preferred protein or collagen powder to make it more filling.
  • Blend in some creaminess: cream cheese and cottage cheese combine to make a smoothie that is incredibly thick and smooth.
  • You can increase the nutritional value of your meal by including a handful of vegetables, such as fresh spinach or kale, half an avocado, or even a handful of frozen cauliflower. The addition of cauliflower and avocado also results in a particularly velvety and creamy consistency.
  • Sweeteners: prefer it sweeter To sweeten, use honey, agave, pitted Medjool dates, or simple syrup.
  • Boost the flavor with a splash of vanilla, almond, or maple extract.
  • Consider experimenting with various powdered spices and herbs, such as acai, maca, spirulina, nutmeg, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Answers to Your Questions About Making a Healthy Fruit Smoothie

Which fruits work best when blended together?

Almost any fruit will do in a smoothie. You can't go wrong with any of these delicious fruits: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, mangos, peaches, cherries, pineapples, watermelons, etc. Use frozen fruit for optimal results. It's a great way to get a creamier smoothie.

Should liquids like milk or water predominate in a smoothie?

The smoothie is missing something, and I think milk would be perfect. It makes for a silkier mouthfeel and enhanced flavor. Milks like coconut milk, almond milk, and regular milk are all wonderful alternatives.

Is ice necessary for a smoothie?

Frozen fruit is not acceptable. Some people mistakenly believe that a smoothie requires ice. One of the best ways to make a cold, creamy smoothie without diluting the flavor is to use frozen fruit. It is acceptable to include ice in smoothies if fresh fruit is all that is available or if you prefer very cold beverages.
