Say Goodbye to Pinkeye: Effective Ways to Eliminate It

On November 08, 2022, Whitney Seltman, OD, who has undergone a medical review, provided crucial insights into taking care of pinkeye. When faced with pinkeye, which is also known as conjunctivitis and characterized by itchy, red eyes with white or yellow discharge in one or both eyes, one might consider seeking medical attention immediately, but it might not be necessary. Allergies, bacteria, and viruses cause pinkeye and can last a week or ten days or more, but sometimes they dissipate without medical intervention.

To improve your condition, irrespective of the cause, you may take some simple steps, such as using a compress by soaking a lint-free cloth in cold water, wringing it, and gently compressing your closed eyelids. If you have pinkeye in only one eye, you should avoid the other eye to prevent infection. If it feels better with warm water, ensure it does not cause further harm or burn your eyelids. Use a compress for short periods, several times a day, and ensure nobody else uses it.

Additionally, over-the-counter eye drops that lubricate or mimic tears can mitigate itching, but avoid those that treat red eyes, and refrigerating them may provide relief. If you wear contact lenses, avoid using them until your pinkeye clears up, after which you may need to replace them and the case to reduce the risk of reinfection.

Pinkeye caused by a virus may spread to your other eye and heal on its own within two weeks, but your doctor may prescribe medication for severe viruses such as Herpes Simplex or Varicella Zoster. Bacterial pinkeye produces more mucus or pus, and your doctor can prescribe antibiotics or eye drops if it fails to improve in a few days. Suppose mucus makes your eyelids stick together, use a warm washcloth to loosen them. Additionally, allergic pinkeye gets better when you limit exposure to the allergen, and your doctor can run tests to identify the allergen. It is not contagious, and you may go to school or work without fear of spreading it.

Wash pillowcases and clothes frequently, and shower before bed to reduce the risk of reinfection. Also, inquire from your doctor about medications, such as antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, decongestants, or steroids, which they may recommend as prescription or over-the-counter drugs to help you. A stye, which resembles a pimple or red patch on the eyelid, or another type of inflammation could cause red, swollen eyes. If home remedies fail to improve your condition within a few days, call your doctor. Seek medical help if you experience the following symptoms.

If you're dealing with the unpleasant symptoms of fever, pain, or changes in vision caused by pinkeye, it's important to take steps to prevent the spread of this highly contagious condition in your household. To avoid infecting others, make sure everyone in the house washes their hands frequently and refrains from touching their eyes. It's also advisable to frequently change towels and pillowcases and wash them using hot water. Ensure that these items are not shared with anyone who has pinkeye.
