When it comes to simple yet entertaining art projects, pumpkins are unrivaled. The ridges on a pumpkin can be used to create the illusion of depth, preventing them from appearing as simple flat circles, and the vibrant orange color is so cheery. Evidence like this demonstrates that basic coloring tools are all you need to give your pumpkins some personality. For the reflected light color, I used yellow Prang® crayons and a lot of pressure to release the maximum amount of pigment. How to Use Templates to Begin Sketching

You may have noticed that the horizontal and vertical centers of each step in all of the tutorials here are separated by a dashed line. Before beginning to draw, students can save time and effort by drawing their own centered lines on blank sheets of paper.

The first pumpkin oval, for instance, is to be centered on the vertical and horizontal lines, as shown in Step 1 below. To ensure the pumpkin fills the paper, make sure to draw that shape large and in the center.

Students are more likely to finish their drawings feeling accomplished if they have a strong beginning. Because learning to draw is all about determining the appropriate size and placement of lines on paper, it is always useful to have a visual reference point to work from.

Does this imply that, before beginning their work, students should take out a ruler and draw a thick line down the middle of a blank sheet of paper? God, no, don't even think about it! That will detract from the final product and be difficult to remove. Instead, just fold the paper in half lengthwise, creasing the fold, and unfolding it. The creases will magically vanish once the drawing is completed and colored in.

Psycological Pumpkin: Positive or Negative?

Collage art projects can teach students about positive and negative shapes while creating some fantastic Halloween decorations.

For this positive/negative pumpkin activity, students will glue down one side of their cutout shapes and then flip them over to create a mirror image. It's hard to find a definition of symmetry that's more straightforward than that.

TIP: The pumpkin's mouth, eye, and mouth shapes should all be cut from the same sheet of paper, as they will be repurposed on the back. When you cut things up into little pieces, you end up with a puzzle that, if you're lucky, you'll be able to put back together again.

Cutting out the eye is easiest if you first make a slit on one side, then remove the triangle. The slit will be nearly invisible after the paper is glued down.

Tools for Making a Happy/Sad Pumpkin

• Black paper, such as that used for construction projects
• Five pieces of orange card stock or construction paper, cut 5″ x 8 Panels of 5 inches in height
• Scissors

Have your older students, who likely won't need much help with the basic cutting and gluing, take the positive/negative theme a step further by adding details to both sides with black marker. white paint markers can be expensive, so a silver metallic marker (which will look pretty white) can be used instead. )
