You're looking to convert Celcius to Fahrenheit. While you'll give your answer in °C to °F, you should know the temperature scales are Celsius and Fahrenheit. This doesn't matter for your final answer, but if you're ever expected to spell out the names, it's good to know. The conversion is really easy:
Multiply the °C temperature by 1.8. Add 32 to this number. This is the answer in °F.
°F = (°C × 9/5) 32
It's just as easy to convert Fahrenheit to Celcius;
°C = (°F − 32) x 5/9
For example, to convert 26°C to °F (the temperature of a warm day):
°F = (°C × 9/5) 32
°F = (26 × 9/5) 32
°F = (46.8) 32
°F = 78.8° F

Celsius vs Fahrenheit: Key Differences
Before we explain how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (and Fahrenheit to Celsius), let’s review the main differences between the two temperature scales.
Celsius (written as °C and also called Centigrade) is the most common temperature scale in the world, used by all but five countries. It’s part of the International System of Units (SI), or what you might know as the metric system, which is typically used in science classes (think centimeters, meters, kilograms, milliliters, etc.) and in science as a whole.
By contrast, Fahrenheit (written as °F) is only used officially by five countries in the world:
 United States
 Belize
 Cayman Islands
 Palau
 Bahamas
Fahrenheit is not part of the metric system; rather, it’s part of the Imperial system, which includes forms of measurements such as inches, feet, pounds, gallons, etc. Moreover, unlike Celsius, it is not typically used in science.
Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula
Unfortunately, converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit isn’t easy to do quickly or in your head. Here are the formulas used to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius. These formulas will give you the exact conversion from one unit of temperature to the other:
Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula: (°C * 1.8) 32 = °F
Fahrenheit to Celsius Formula: (°F  32) / 1.8 = °C
For example, say the temperature outside is 18 °C and you want to know what this would equal in Fahrenheit. Here’s how your equation would look once you plug in 18 for °C:
(18 * 1.8) 32(32.4) 32
=64.4 °F
Here’s another example if you want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius: say you’re feeling ill and your body temperature is 101.3 °F. To find out what this equals in Celsius, simply plug 101.3 into the °F part in the second equation written above:
(101.3  32) / 1.8 (69.3) / 1.8
=38.5 °C
As you can see, these conversions aren’t particularly hard to carry out, but they do take some time and aren’t the easiest to do without a calculator on hand.

As you can see from this chart, Fahrenheit temperatures are typically a lot higher than their equivalent Celsius temperatures are.
Also, notice how the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit starts to get smaller the lower you go in temperature—until, that is, they're the exact same! As the chart indicates, 40 °C is the same temperature as 40 °F. This point is called parity, meaning the two scales use the same value to represent the same temperature. Unfortunately (or fortunately, since this is pretty cold!), you likely won’t come across this temperature in your daily life.
Note that parity only happens at 40°. The lower you go after parity (i.e., the further you go into the negatives), the bigger the difference starts to become again between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit: Quick Trick
If you find yourself needing to quickly convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, here is a simple trick you can use: multiply the temperature in degrees Celsius by 2, and then add 30 to get the (estimated) temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. This rule of thumb is really useful and also pretty accurate for most weatherrelated temperatures.
For example, if the temperature outside is 15 °C, this would come out to around 60 °F:
(15 * 2) 30(30) 30
= 60 °F (In reality, 15 °C is equivalent to 59 °F—that’s pretty close!)
Of course, expect the actual temperature to be a few degrees off, but for the most part, this is a reliable and easy way to convert temperatures in your head fast.
If you want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, do the opposite: subtract 30 from the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, and then divide by 2 to get the temperature in degrees Celsius.
For example, if the temperature outside is 84 °F, this would be roughly equal to 27 °C:
(84  30) / 254 / 2
= 27 °C (In reality, 84 °F is equivalent to 28.89 °C—again, that’s a pretty close estimate!).

I consider myself pretty conversant in metric units. I know that 20 kilograms is 44 pounds (double it and add 10%) and that 5 kilometers is 3 miles (I’ve, uh, run a lot of 5Ks). But celsius temperatures have always been a bit of a mystery to me—until now.
Not only are Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees different sizes (each Celsius degree covers more of the scale) they have different baselines. Zero degrees Fahrenheit is a bitterly cold day in the dead of winter. Zero degrees Celsius means that you’re right on the cusp of where a predicted snow flurry might turn out to be a rain shower, or vice versa.
Because of these two factors, converting is traditionally a twostep process: you need to multiply and add (or subtract and divide). That was still the case last time we covered a way to “quickly” convert from one system to the other—the quickness in that example coming from the suggestion to use 2 and 30 as the relevant conversion factors, instead of 1.8 and 32.
But there’s a better way, and all you need to do is memorize four numbers, and flip them to convert. (Or memorize one of them and know that you can add or subtract 12 to get each of the others.)
Here’s the trick:
 04 degrees Celsius is 40 degrees Fahrenheit (chilly!)
 16 degrees Celsius is 61 degrees Fahrenheit (hoodie weather)
 28 degrees Celsius is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (balmy!)
 40 degrees Celsius is 104 degrees Fahrenheit (stay inside and crank up the A/C)
For these particular numbers, you’re just reversing the digits: 16 becomes 61, get it? The only weird one is 40, but now that you’ve read it, you get the idea. Four degrees Celsius is 40 Fahrenheit, and 40 Celsius is 104 Fahrenheit.
Now, if you’re on vacation and they tell you it’s going to be 32 today, you know that that’s more than 28 (82 Fahrenheit) but thankfully below 40 Celsius (104 F). It’s tank top and shorts weather.
On the other hand, if it’s going to be 10 degrees, you know that it will be cooler than 61 Fahrenheit (10 is less than 16), but warmer than 40 (10 is more than 4). Bring a jacket, and you’ll be good.
And a fun bonus fact, in case you’re ever vacationing in the Arctic: 40 is 40 in both scales.

If you're living in the United States, you're probably accustomed to reading temperatures in Fahrenheit. On a summer day with the sun beating down on you, it may feel like almost 100 degrees, while a winter day may feel closer to 40 degrees. Yet, if you were living in almost any other country in the world, you're likely used to reading temperatures in Celsius. In this case, 40 degrees describes a hot summer day, while zero degrees would be more typical of a winter day.
The Fahrenheit scale was created by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724. He originally created the scale to measure temperature using mercury thermometers, which he also invented. The Celsius scale was created by Anders Celsius in 1742. But when the scale was first introduced, Celsius used the reverse of today's scale. He labeled 0 as the boiling point of water and 100 as the freezing point. After Celsius' death, Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus flipped the Celsius scale into what it is today, making 100 represent boiling temperature and 0 as the freezing point.
How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit Quickly
This formula will help you make a close estimate for a Fahrenheit temperature when you're converting from Celsius. This is a great formula to do quickly in your head. Simply multiply the Celsius temperature by 2 and add 30 to it:
(Celsius temp. x 2) 30 = Fahrenheit temp.
Here's an example using 30 degrees C.
(30 x 2) 30 = 90 degrees F.
This is pretty close to the 86 degrees F reading you'd get using the more precise method (explained later).
How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius Quickly
To do a rough approximation of Celsius using Fahrenheit, reverse the earlier formula. Subtract 30 from the Fahrenheit degrees, then divide your answer by 2.
(Fahrenheit temp. – 30) ÷ 2 = Celsius temp.
Let's say the Fahrenheit temperature is 80 degrees. The approximate Celsius temperature would be:
(80 – 30) ÷ 2 = 25 C
How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (Exact Calculation)
If you're looking to get a more precise calculation, you can use this exact formula. You may want to have a calculator handy when you do this.

Explanation
There are two main temperature scales:
°C, the Celsius Scale (part of the Metric System, used in most countries) °F, the Fahrenheit Scale (used in the US)
They both measure the same thing (temperature!), but use different numbers:
 Boiling water (at normal pressure) measures 100° in Celsius, but 212° in Fahrenheit
 And as water freezes it measures 0° in Celsius, but 32° in Fahrenheit
Like this:
Looking at the diagram, notice:
 The scales start at a different number (0 vs 32), so we will need to add or subtract 32
 The scales rise at a different rate (100 vs 180), so we will also need to multiply
And so, to convert:
from Celsius to Fahrenheit: first multiply by 180100, then add 32
from Fahrenheit to Celsius: first subtract 32, then multiply by 100180
180100 can be simplified to 95,
and 100180 can be simplified to 59, so we get this:
First: 25° / 5 = 5
Then: 5 × 9 = 45

First: 98.6° − 32 = 66.6

We can swap the order of divide and multiply if we want, but don't change the add or subtract. So this is also OK:
First: 98.6° − 32 = 66.6

Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 59 = °C
9/5 is equal to 1.8, so we can also use this method:

Celsius and Fahrenheit definition
The Celsius temperature range was originally defined by setting zero as the temperature at which water froze. Zero degrees C was later redefined as the temperature at which ice melts. The other point at which Celsius was set – 100 degrees Celsius – was defined as the boiling point of water.
Since its definition, the Celsius scale has been redefined to peg it to Kelvin. Zero degrees Celsius is now defined as 273.15K. As one degree Celsius is equal to one Kelvin, boiling point of water is equal to 273.15 100 = 373.15 Kelvin.
The Fahrenheit temperature range is based on setting the freezing point of water at 32 degrees, and boiling to 212 degrees. This means that boiling and freezing point are 180 degrees apart. Absolute zero is defined as 459.67°F.
Celsius to Fahrenheit formula
Because both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are offset– ie neither are defined as starting at zero. On top of that, for every additional unit of heat energy the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales add a different additional value. Because of this setup, it’s impossible to say that doubling the °C or °F value doubles the amount of heat energy, so it’s difficult to get an intuitive grasp of how much energy 1 degree Fahrenheit or Celsius actually is.
The only temperature system that works intuitively – where a doubling of value doubles the energy – is Kelvin, where absolute zero is 0, body temperature is 310.15K and boiling water is 373.15K. The problem with the Kelvin scale is that the zero end of the scale is too far from human experience to be useful – as anyone who set their room temperature to 20.5 Kelvin would attest, if they lived long enough.
What is the difference between Centigrade and Celsius?
It’s just a naming convention. Degrees Centigrade and degrees Celsius are the same thing. Degrees Celsius (invented by Anders Celsius) are sometimes called Centigrade, because the scale was defined between 0 and 100 degrees, hence centigrade meaning a scale consisting of 1/100ths.

Temperature scales are usually named after the person who created them. The temperature scales used in this formula were created by Anders Celsius (1701–1744) and Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686–1736).
I am unsure if it was Anders Celsius or Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit who created this conversion formula. Literature indicates that the Fahrenheit scale was invented in 1724 and the Celsius (Centigrade) scale invented in 1742. From these dates, it's probable that Anders Celsius invented this conversion formula.
How To Convert Celsius To Fahrenheit
Using the Celsius to Fahrenheit formula: Fahrenheit (°F) = (Celsius x 1.8) 32, these examples show how to convert a temperature in Celsius to Fahrenheit.
